Overview - 10BD Filing

Form 10BD is a mandatory statement that must be furnished to the Income Tax Department by a
Trust, Institution, or NGO approved under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961. It is
prescribed under Rule 18AB of the Income Tax Rules, 1962, for reporting donations received,
enabling donors to claim deductions under Section 80G of the Act.

The reporting entity has two options for handling donation certificates:

1. Direct Filing of Form 10BD – Automatically generates Form 10BE certificates for
donors within 24 hours.
2. Generating Pre-Acknowledgement

A reporting entity can generate up to 1,000 Pre-ARNs without filing Form 10BD. These unique
numbers must be recorded while filing Form 10BD, ensuring that all manually issued
certificates are accounted for.
After filing Form 10BD, the entity must download and issue Form 10BE, which includes details
such as PAN, name of the institution, approval numbers (u/s 80G & 35(1)), and donor
information.

Prerequisites for Availing this Service 10BD Filing

  • The taxpayer must be registered on the e-Filing portal.
  • The taxpayer must have a valid PAN and login credentials for e-Filing.
  • The PAN status must be “Active” as per the PAN database.
  • If using Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), it must be valid, registered, and not expired.

3.2 Who Can Use It?
Any Trust, Institution, or NGO approved under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act must
furnish Form 10BD to the Income Tax Department.

Form at a Glance
Form 10BD consists of the following three sections:
1. Generate Pre-Acknowledgement Numbers (Pre-ARNs for manual issuance of Form
10BE).
2. View Previously Generated Pre-Acknowledgement Numbers.
3. File the Statement of Particulars (Form 10BD) under Section 80G(5)/35(1A)(i).

Key Information Required for 10BD Filing

When submitting Form 10BD, the following details must be provided:

  • Donor Identification Number: PAN, Aadhaar, Passport, Driving License, or any other valid unique ID.
  • Statement Number: A unique identifier for the submitted statement.
  • Donor’s Name: Full legal name of the donor.
  • Donor’s Address: Complete address of the donor.
  • Section Code: Applicable section under which the donation qualifies (e.g., Section 35(1)(iii), Section 35(1)(ii), Section 35(1)(iia)).
  • Mode of Receipt: Cash, cheque/draft, in-kind, or other methods.
  • Type of Donation: Whether the donation is specific, corpus, restricted grant, or others.
  • Donation Amount: Total amount contributed by the donor.

Applicability For 10BD Filing

Form 10BD must be filed by any organization classified as a charitable institution and recognized under the Income Tax Act. This includes:

  • Trusts
  • Colleges
  • Schools
  • Research institutions
  • Universities
  • Other approved charitable entities

The organization’s funds must fall under one of the following sections to qualify:

  • Section 35(1A)(i) – For research institutions, colleges, or universities.
  • Section 80G(5)(viii) – For institutions providing tax-deductible donations.

Penalties for Late 10BD Filing

Failing to submit Form 10BD on time leads to penalties under the Income Tax Act:

  • Section 234G: A late fee of ₹200 per day is charged until the form is filed.
  • Section 271K: The Assessing Officer may levy a penalty ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹1,00,000 for not furnishing the statement.

Due Date Form 10BD Filing

For the financial year 2024-25, the due date for filing Form 10BD is 31st May 2025. This means all eligible trusts, institutions, and organizations that received donations during the year must file their donation statement by this date.

How to Download Filed Form 10BD Filing?

Follow this step-by-step guide to download your filed Form 10BD:

  1. Log in to the Income Tax Portal:
  2. Access e-File Menu:
    • Click on the “e-File” menu, then select “Income Tax Forms” from the dropdown.
  3. View Filed Forms:
    • Choose “View Filed Forms” from the list.
  4. Locate Form 10BD:
    • On the new page, click on “Statement of Particulars to be filed” and then select “View All”.
  5. Download Form 10BD:
    • Find your filed form and click “Download Form” to get a copy of your submitted Form 10BD for your records.

How to File Form 10BD Filing Online?

Filing Form 10BD is mandatory through the Income Tax Department’s official portal. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Log in to the Income Tax Portal:
  2. Access Form 10BD:
    • Go to the “e-file” section, select “Income Tax Forms”, and locate Form 10BD.
    • Choose the relevant financial year and click “Continue”.
  3. Enter Details:
    • Click “Provide details” to open the form.
    • The form has three parts:
      • Basic Information (pre-filled automatically — just confirm).
      • Donation and Donor Details (manually fill in the required data).
      • Verification (final review and sign-off).
  4. Upload Donation Data:
    • Download the provided Excel template to input donation details.
    • Save the completed file as CSV and upload it back to the portal.
    • The portal supports auto-save, so you won’t lose progress.
  5. Verify and Submit:
    • Go to the “Verification” tab, double-check all details, and click “Proceed to Verify”.
    • Confirm by selecting “Yes” and submit the form.
    • Download the acknowledgment for your records.
