Importers and exporters are required to renew their IEC Code or permit promptly, as an expired code is treated as if no code exists. Failure to renew in a timely manner may lead to the deactivation of your IEC code by the DGFT. The IEC code is essential for shipping, customs processing, and international trade. Therefore, it’s wise to ensure that the IEC code is updated and renewed on time to avoid any risk of deactivation or cancellation.

The IEC is a mandatory 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) that is required for anyone involved in the import or export of goods. Renewing your IEC registration is a straightforward process that can be completed online through the DGFT website. Simply log in with your credentials, go to “IEC Portfolio Management” under “Registrations,” click on “Update IEC,” and follow the instructions. The renewal is free and typically takes around 30 minutes, provided your information is current!
In February 2021, the DGFT issued a directive requiring all importers and exporters to update their IEC annually between April and June. Non-compliance will result in the deactivation of the code, which is crucial for conducting international trade, as it is required by banks for overseas transactions.

Visit the DGFT Website: Start by navigating to the official DGFT website where you can register for services related to Import Export Code (IEC).
Log In to Your Account: If you have already registered, enter your credentials to log in to your account.
Navigate to IEC Application Section: Once logged in, find and click on the IEC application section to proceed.
Access the IEC Link: Click on the IEC link provided on the portal. This action will prompt a new window to open.
Digital Signature Request: You will see a request for Digital Signature Authentication. To validate your IEC, you need to provide either a digital signature or your Aadhar card details.
Authenticate Your IEC: Follow the prompts to complete the authentication process using your chosen method (digital signature or Aadhar card).
Update or Renew Your IEC: After successful authentication, you can easily proceed to update or renew your IEC certificate online. Select the option to modify or update the IEC.
Fill Required Information: Complete all the necessary fields and information required for the renewal process.
Review Your Changes: Once you’ve filled in the information, take a moment to review all changes made to ensure accuracy.
Authenticate the Changes: Use your digital signature to authenticate the updates or renewals you’ve submitted.
Download Your IEC Certificate: After the renewal process is finalized, you can download your updated IEC certificate by selecting the IEC print option available on the portal.
