The Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion (DPIIT) oversees the scheme’s programs, and the streamlined registration process has significantly expanded development opportunities and job creation within the Indian economy.

A startup is a newly established, often small business founded by an individual or group. What distinguishes it is its offering of a novel product or service, typically driven by the pursuit of innovation and growth.

Eligibility for Startup India Registration

  • Legal Structure: It must be registered as a private limited company or a limited liability partnership.
  • Age of Enterprise: The enterprise should not have completed ten years from its date of incorporation or registration.
  • Annual Turnover: The enterprise’s annual turnover must not have exceeded 100 crore in any financial year since its incorporation.
  • Purpose and Innovation: The enterprise should be actively engaged in the development, innovation, or improvement of services or processes, with the goal of generating employment or creating wealth.
  • Originality: Crucially, the startup enterprise must not be formed by the reconstruction or splitting up of an existing business.
  • DIPP Approval: The organization must obtain approval from the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).
  • Funding Support for DIPP Approval: To secure DIPP approval, the firm needs to be supported by an Incubation fund, Angel Fund, or Private Equity Fund.
  • Intellectual Property: A supporter guarantee from the Indian Patent and Trademark Office is required.
  • Incubation Support: A proposal letter from an incubator is necessary.
  • Tax Benefit: Capital increases are exempt from income tax under the Startup India scheme.
  • Innovation Requirement: The firm must offer innovative ideas, products, or services.
  • SEBI Registration of Funding Entities: Angel funds, Incubation funds, Accelerators, Private Equity Funds, and Angel networks involved must be registered under the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Documents required for Startup India Registration

  • Certificate of Incorporation: Official proof of company registration, issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) or equivalent authority.
  • Company PAN Card: The company’s Permanent Account Number.
  • Founders’ KYC Documents: Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Aadhar cards for all directors or partners.
  • Brief Business Description: A summary outlining your business concept, innovation, or product.
  • Authorization Letter (if applicable): A signed letter authorizing a consultant to file the application on your behalf.

Registration process of Startup India

  1. Incorporate Your Business: Before applying, your business must be legally registered as a Private Limited Company, LLP, or Registered Partnership Firm. (No extra Startup India step during incorporation).
  2. Register on Shram Suvidha Portal: First, register your company on the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s Shram Suvidha Portal.
  3. Apply on Startup India Website: Visit the Startup India website and follow the online registration process. This includes confirming you’re a startup via the Shram Suvidha link and providing details about your business operations and goals.
  4. Obtain DPIIT Recognition: After creating your profile, apply for recognition from DPIIT to access program benefits.
  5. Submit Application and Documents: Complete the recognition form and submit required documents.
  6. Describe Your Startup: Briefly explain your innovative product/service and how it solves a problem or improves something existing.
