The Government e-Marketplace (GEM) is an online platform launched by the Commerce and Industry Ministry on August 9, 2016, under the Allocation of Business Rules, 1961. It serves as the official portal for public procurement, requiring all sellers to obtain GEM registration to participate in the procurement process. Once registered on the GEM portal, sellers can list their brands, products, and services, undergo vendor assessments, participate in bidding processes, and receive orders.

The Government of India (GOI), under the Make in India initiative, mandates that all government departments source goods and services through the GEM platform. The portal facilitates the procurement of various stores, allowing vendors to sell their products directly to government departments and purchase goods as well. It is compulsory for government offices to procure supplies via the GEM portal. Only individuals or entities with valid GEM registration—available for both buyers and sellers—are authorized to buy or sell on the platform. The primary goal of GEM is to ensure efficient, transparent, and swift procurement of goods and services.

Required Documents as a Buyer for GEM Registration

Below are the essential documents required for a buyer to complete GEM registration:

  • Aadhar Card of the Head of Department (for government departments)
  • Official Email ID
  • Mobile Number of the authorized person, registered with Aadhar
  • Organization details including:
    • Department Name
    • Landline Number
    • Complete address of the ministry with PIN code

Procedure for GeM Registration

  1. Fill out the registration form online.
  2. Submit the completed form.
  3. Review your entered details after submission.
  4. Complete the registration by making the required payment.
  5. After payment, a GeM associate will contact you to verify your details and conduct OTP verification.
  6. Upon successful verification, you will receive your seller ID and login credentials within 24 business hours.
