Step-by-Step SAFTA Registration Process

Step 1: Obtain an IEC Code

  • The Import-Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit PAN-based code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
  • It is mandatory for all import and export activities in India.
  • Exporters can apply for an IEC through the DGFT online portal.

Step 2: Check Eligibility

  • Verify whether the goods being exported qualify for preferential treatment under the SAFTA Agreement.
  • The Rules of Origin under SAFTA define the criteria for goods to be considered as originating from a member country.
  • These rules vary based on the type of product and its manufacturing process.

Step 3: Submit the Application

  • Exporters must submit an application for the SAFTA Certificate of Origin to the authorized agency under the trade agreement.
