The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has introduced a mandatory Coal Import Monitoring System (CIMS) registration for importers in India. Effective from April 1, 2021, this requirement applies to all coal imports, as stipulated in DGFT Notification No. 17/2015-2020, dated September 5, 2019.
As per the same notification, the import policy for coal has been revised from ‘Free’ to ‘Free with compulsory registration under CIMS’. This system aims to collect detailed data on coal imports, enabling the domestic industry to develop strategies for import substitution and better market planning.
